SLEEP DENTISTRY

Sedation dentistry, sometimes called sleep dentistry, refers to the way a dentist can manage anxiety during a dental appointment. Patients under conscious sedation are able to respond to commands and breathe voluntarily. Conscious sedation can be achieved via oral administration (pill) or intravenously (IV).

I.V. Sedation

IV Sedation can be administered by Dr. Homanfar who has specialized training and certification. With this type of sedation, medications are administered directly into the blood stream. The greatest advantage to this technique is that the amount administered can be tailored to the procedure and patient.

IV Sedation is only used in dental offices where practitioners such as Dr. Homanfar have received advanced training and have met the requirements for certification. The medication taken for IV Sedation is more effective than the same drug taken orally. There is a more profound amnesia associated with this technique

When you arrive for a procedure during which this technique will be implemented, Dr. Homanfar will consult with you regarding your medical history and spend time explaining how the IV Sedative will be administered and what you can expect before, during, and after.

Oral Sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation is administered by taking a pill. There will be no noticeable difference in body function under effects of the pill and the patient will continue to breathe normally, however it is not uncommon for the patient to fall asleep. Some degree of amnesia is common.

This form of sedation is often preferred by patients who have a fear of needles. About an hour before your dental procedure, you'll take a pill that's provided to you prior to your dental visit. Because of the sedative, a friend or family member will need to drive you to the office and take you home after your visit.

Procedures Performed Under Conscious Sedation

•Most routine dental work

•Deep cleaning, scaling, and root planting

•Implant placement

•Crowns and bridges

•Extractions
